State of Play June 2026 Recap: Wolverine, God of War, Tomb Raider, and More

Sony’s June 2026 State of Play had a lot to prove.

After weeks of rumors, leaks, and fan wishlists, the showcase finally arrived with a mix of major gameplay reveals, surprise revivals, release date updates, and a few smaller announcements that still gave PlayStation fans something to talk about.

Was it the biggest State of Play ever? Probably not.

Was it still a packed show with several games worth watching? Absolutely.

The biggest takeaway is pretty clear. PlayStation’s late 2026 and early 2027 calendar is starting to look very crowded. Between Marvel’s Wolverine, God of War: Laufey, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, Rayman Legends Retold, and Until Dawn 2, Sony and its partners are leaning heavily into recognizable names, cinematic action, horror, and nostalgia.

Below, we’re breaking down five of the biggest games from the June 2026 State of Play, followed by the other announcements shown during the event.

Five Biggest Games From State of Play June 2026

1. Marvel’s Wolverine

Marvel’s Wolverine was easily the star of the show.

Insomniac finally gave players a proper look at gameplay, and the tone is exactly what many fans were hoping for. This does not look like Spider-Man with claws. It looks heavier, bloodier, and more brutal, with Logan tearing through enemies in a way that feels built around his actual character.

The footage showed Wolverine in the yellow suit fighting cyberpunk-style mercenaries who appear to be kidnapping mutants. The world also seems to be taking a different approach to the X-Men, with mutants hiding and the full team not fully established yet.

Combat looks focused on close-range brawling, blocking, rage attacks, healing, and violent finishers. It seems more like a focused action adventure than a massive open-world game, which might be the right choice. Wolverine works best when the action feels personal, angry, and physical.

Jean Grey also appeared during the reveal, which opens the door for a larger mutant story without making the game feel too crowded too early.

If Insomniac can do for Wolverine what it did for Spider-Man, this could become one of PlayStation’s biggest releases of 2026.

2. God of War: Laufey

Sony Santa Monica’s next game is another God of War project, but not in the exact way many expected.

God of War: Laufey puts the spotlight on Faye, Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother. The reveal appears to pick up after her death in God of War 2018, sending her into a strange afterlife where gods from different mythologies seem to be battling each other.

That is a bold setup.

Instead of another Kratos-led journey, this game seems focused on Faye’s story, her combat style, and her connection to the wider mythology of the newer God of War era. The gameplay still carries the modern God of War DNA, but Faye fights with swordplay, magic, aerial attacks, and finishers that give her a different rhythm.

The reveal reportedly showed a large amount of gameplay, which suggests Sony Santa Monica is confident in what it has. Even so, there are still a lot of questions. We do not know how linear the game is, how much it connects directly to Kratos and Atreus, or when it will actually release.

Still, the idea has potential. Faye has always been one of the most important unseen figures in the modern God of War story. Giving her a full game could add real weight to everything that came before.

3. Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis

Tomb Raider is coming back in a very direct way.

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis looks like a remake of the original classic Tomb Raider, but not a simple one-to-one recreation. The trailer showed more action, more characters, bigger cinematic sequences, and a version of Lara that seems closer to her classic style while still borrowing movement ideas from the modern games.

That balance is important.

Classic Tomb Raider had a very specific identity. It was about exploration, danger, atmosphere, puzzle solving, and Lara Croft being cool without the game needing to explain it every five minutes. The newer games brought stronger movement, set pieces, and combat polish.

Legacy of Atlantis seems to be trying to pull both eras together.

The trailer also showed dinosaurs, rope swinging, gunplay, and large scripted action moments. That could either make the remake feel fresh or push it too far away from what made the original special. For now, though, it looks like a confident return for one of gaming’s most iconic characters.

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is currently set for February 12, 2027.

4. Until Dawn 2

Until Dawn 2 was one of the more surprising announcements from the showcase.

The original Until Dawn became a PlayStation horror favorite because of its slasher movie setup, branching choices, and character deaths that actually felt tied to player decisions. The sequel is bringing that formula back, but with a very different setting.

Instead of the snowy lodge from the first game, Until Dawn 2 takes place on a tropical island getaway. The trailer showed young characters partying, flirting, and slowly realizing that someone on the island is hunting them.

It is a smart change in scenery. A tropical horror setting gives the sequel a different mood while still keeping the same basic structure. Attractive people make terrible choices. Something starts killing them. The player has to react quickly and live with the results.

The biggest question is the studio change. Supermassive Games is not leading this one. Firesprite is handling the sequel, which makes the project feel a little uncertain. Until Dawn has a very specific tone, and getting that balance of camp, tension, and consequence right will matter.

Still, the setup works. If the decisions feel meaningful and the cast is fun to watch fall apart, Until Dawn 2 could bring back the kind of interactive horror PlayStation fans have been missing.

5. Rayman Legends Retold

Rayman Legends Retold is an interesting one because the original game is already excellent.

Ubisoft is bringing Rayman Legends back with a remake that includes a new area, new music, couch co-op, and a redesigned visual style. The biggest change is the move toward full 3D graphics, stepping away from the animated look that helped the 2013 version stand out.

That choice will probably be divisive.

Rayman Legends was loved because it felt alive. The art style, music levels, platforming, and co-op chaos all worked together beautifully. A remake does not automatically need to exist when the original still holds up so well.

At the same time, this is still Rayman Legends. If Ubisoft keeps the level design sharp and makes the new content worthwhile, Retold could introduce one of the best platformers of its generation to a new audience.

Rayman Legends Retold is currently set to release on October 1, 2026.

Other State of Play June 2026 Announcements

Dune Awakening is coming to PS5 on September 22, 2026.

Kemuri received a deeper gameplay look, showing co-op action, stylish city traversal, and Yo-kai hunting.

Ill returned with a new gameplay trailer, showing more of its gross, violent, first-person horror style. It is currently aiming for 2027.

The Lost Wild resurfaced as a dinosaur survival horror game built more around hiding and being hunted than pure action. It is also planned for 2027.

Bancho the Chef was revealed as a Dave the Diver spin-off prequel.

Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls showed new gameplay featuring characters like Doctor Doom, Green Goblin, Carnage, and Magneto.

New PlayStation Classics were also announced, including Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams, Gitaroo Man, and The Mindgate Conspiracy.

Dynasty Warriors 3 Complete Edition Remastered was also shown as a modernized return of the 2001 game.

Final Thoughts

The June 2026 State of Play was not subtle.

Sony leaned into big names, recognizable franchises, and a packed late-year release schedule. Marvel’s Wolverine gave the show its biggest moment, God of War: Laufey created the most conversation, and Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis gave classic PlayStation fans something familiar to hold onto.

What stands out most is how crowded September and October 2026 already look. Wolverine, Control Resonant, Dune Awakening, Onimusha, Silent Hill, Rayman, Ace Combat, Phantom Blade Zero, and No Rest for the Wicked are all circling the same window.

That is a lot of games.

Not every announcement will land equally, but the showcase did what it needed to do. It gave PlayStation fans a clearer look at what is coming next, while also leaving enough mystery around the biggest titles to keep people talking.

If even half of these games deliver, late 2026 could be a very busy season for PS5 players.
