Nintendo’s always getting people’s attention with their consoles and games. The Nintendo Switch is no exception, as it’s their current console and succeeds the Wii U as a home console and the 3DS as a handheld at the same time. It’s already got plenty of games to try out, add-ons that expand the play factor of the console, and best of all, Joy-Cons to switch out with your tablet-like screen. But is there more to the Switch than just word hype? Let’s discuss in a review of yet another popular Nintendo console. The Nintendo Switch allows players to enjoy their games however they see fit. For example, the screen can stay in the docking bay while the Joy-Cons work separately or connected to a Charging Grip. Alternatively, they can use the Pro Controller if a standard affair suits their needs more. Certain games, like ones with multiplayer or work as racing games, can work with just one Joy-Con in-hand, and there’s even a steering wheel meant for the latter game offerings like the Wii Remote did years ago. In terms of other features, the Switch utilizes, fans can either play at home with the Switch in its docking bay or on the go with the Joy-Cons attached. Of course, games will be needed to further enjoy the Switch, and the game library’s got just about everything you need and then some! Whether it’s main IP favorites like Super Mario Odyssey, licensed games such as Fortnite, Link’s Awakening, or the smaller-focus offerings like Cuphead, there’s no end to the variety that the Switch has, and it’s got no sign of stopping, either. These games can be bought at physical retail or downloaded online; the latter method is where the Nintendo Switch Online membership provides the extra perks that would entice fans with news, DLC, and the like. Here’s the part of the review that may raise eyebrows to some, that being the graphics; while the Switch’s graphics are HD, the at-best results from the 1280 x 720 screen is 720p (though future versions have 1080p for the visuals). Granted, Nintendo generally focuses on the meat and potatoes of their games first and foremost, but it will mean that it’s visually inferior to the PS4 and Xbox One X. On another note, taking it on the go means buying a case and charger if you’re planning to play outside your home. Regardless, the minor faults of the Switch don’t outweigh the quality the rest of the console has. It’s still neat to have it playable like a normal console would while also featuring the novelty of handheld mobility. Set aside any Reddit memes jabbing Switch owners and give it a try!
